Shelby’s answer to LFGA Candidate Questions.

1) At this time, I support  the continued operation of the Lethbridge Fish & Game Shooting Sports Facility in the current location in Pennaquim Park.  Once on Council, I would expect to learn more about the pluses or minuses to the facility remaining where it is.

2)  The banning of handguns is complex.  I am not a gun owner, so I would need to learn more, from the Police Chief regarding case numbers as what banning rule would be in the best interest for the greater good.  I think safe handling and management of any firearm is key.  As a youth living on a farm, I learned to respect and handle any firearm with caution.   I also think the offense data will show what rules are needed regarding handgun danger be to Lethbridge residents.     The Federal government has said it will place the choice of banning handguns in the hands of municipalities. Lethbridge has an extremely active handgun sport-related community and culture. Would you support banning handguns in Lethbridge? Why or why not?

3) I certainly am not in favour of assault-style weapons and would need to hear the data from the Police Chief about needed rules of regulations.    Do you believe a ban on so-called ‘assault-style weapons’ that were legally owned by law-abiding people involved in the shooting sports makes our communities safer?

4) I do not have  PAL or RPAL licience as I am not a gun owner.  I understand the licensing process is rigorous – which I support – training is key.   Do you understand the process of becoming a licensed firearm owner in Canada? Do you have a PAL or RPAL?

5) I am not against ethical or sports hunting, as long as it is managed and safe.  Have you experienced sport shooting or ethical hunting yourself?  What do you think are the key points to ethical hunting?

6) I have not used the LFGA shooting facility or involved in any of your conservation projects, although I have read about them.  Have you used the Lethbridge Fish & Game Associations Shooting Sports Facility or been involved in any of our many conservation projects or activities?

7) I am not against city funding support to upgrade the LFGA facility – but I understand there is a process in place and would need to understand the full funding options and costs along with benefits to the Community aside for ongoing gun handling training    Do you support the City’s financial support of facility upgrades at the LFGA Shooting Sports Facility?

8) I understand the sporting / recreation benefit and funding needs and supports that will be of benefit to the Community aside for ongoing gun handling training   Do you support the statement that the Lethbridge Fish and Game Association Shooting Sports Facility and related organizations represent an important community sport and recreation resource in our community?

9) I believe that LFGA should be treated the same as every sporting or recreation facility is gauged and reviewed on.  As each entity has a benefit to the people of Lethbridge and have funding supports needs, that can be of National benefit (Shooting Competitions) to the Community aside for ongoing save gun handling and training. Do you believe that the LFGA Shooting Sports Facility should be treated differently than other sporting venues by the City of Lethbridge. If so, how?

10) I support and recognize the ongoing and continued conservation work done by the Lethbridge Fish & Game Association membership on habitat protection.  Keep up the great river valley and coulee ecosystem, animal – flower and fauna (hills) education and work.  I am a country girl and love our river valley and respect the safe thoughtful gun owners.  The LFGA on behalf of its members donates thousands of dollars, and thousands of hours into conservation and habitat yearly. Do you feel this is important at the municipal level and are you involved in any of these activities or do you support wildlife conservation and habitat protection in other ways?
