Do you support the continued operation of the Lethbridge Fish & Game Shooting Sports Facility in its current location in Pennaquim Park?
I support having the facility left at the current location because a tremendous effort has gone in to establishing it.   It’s well used and seems to be safer than ever. Should concerns arise internally or by way of the community, I defer to the LFGA to collaborate with the City to decide what is best for LFGA and the community in terms of re-locating. I would support whatever decision is deemed best.

Do you believe the City of Lethbridge has an obligation to residents by assisting the Lethbridge Fish and Game Association provide a safe, controlled environment to use firearms?
It was the City who approved the location of the range and therefore needs to be part of ensuring safety for its community by assisting the LFGA in whatever way to provide a safe, controlled environment to use firearms.

Do you agree that the LFGA Shooting Sports Facility represents an important community sport and recreation resource?
The many events initiated by the LFGA bring the sporting community together providing not only important social activities but increasing professionalism and safety for all involved. These events add vitality to our city and to its economics in terms of hotel and restaurant use; shopping and so on.

Do you believe that the LFGA Shooting Sports Facility should be treated differently than other sporting venues by the City of Lethbridge? If so, how?
Every sporting activity has its risks so I’m not sure why the sport of shooting would have to be treated ‘differently’.  Obviously fire arms are involved.  Having been a range officer, I’m impressed with the level of instruction and the degree to which LFGA constantly stresses safety. This shows responsibility and gives members and our community confidence that the range is operated with utmost safety, and for that must be commended.  Data from the National Shooting Sports Foundation shows that compared to other sports, shooting ranks third in safety when compared to 28 other recreational pursuits ranging from baseball to wrestlinghttp://www.nssf.org/PDF/research/Hunting%20Safe%20Activity%20Chart%20NSSF%20branded.pdf

What is your position on ethical hunting and our need to support modern methods of wildlife management.
Ethical Hunting
Hearing stories of people like trophy hunter Walter Palmer who killed Cecil the Lion do nothing but enrage the public.

I believe most hunters understand ethical behavior…that it refers to knowing
and respecting the game they are hunting; being familiar with the places they hunt, the wildlife that live there … that they follow the laws and behave in respectful ethical ways that satisfies society.
LFGA very much promotes ethical behavior – its mission statement addresses this which should be reassuring to our community:

Wildlife Management is an area in which learning is ongoing.  Alberta Government Wildlife management unit provides good information and is always looking for public and club input.  http://aep.alberta.ca/fish-wildlife/fishing-hunting-trapping/hunting-alberta/wildlife-management-units.aspx

How would you support the extensive conservation, environment protection and revitalization, and wildlife management programs we provide?
This is one of the best things that a club can do.  If support is needed, I would want to know directly from LFGA what kind of help they require and would absolutely support it.

Have you ever worked with the LFGA in the past and what was your experience?
Having been a member and a Range Office, I’m impressed with the level of instruction and the degree to which LFGA constantly stresses safety.  What it’s shown me is that the club is responsible; cares about the safety of its members and community and for that must be commended and supported.
