LFGA Survey 2017

Jeffrey Coffman, Candidate for City Council

*Do you support the continued operation of the Lethbridge Fish & Game
Shooting Sports Facility in its current location in Pennaquim Park?  *
Yes. The LFGA has clearly demonstrated its ability to operate the facility in a safe and sustainable manner, in its existing location.

*Do you believe the City of Lethbridge has an obligation to residents by
assisting the Lethbridge Fish and Game Association provide a safe,
controlled environment to use firearms?*

Yes, in partnership with the LFGA. I know that the LFGA makes every effort to ensure the safety of its members and of our residents. If there are additional measures required, the Association and the City ought to discuss the possibilities.

*Do you agree that the LFGA Shooting Sports Facility represents an
important community sport and recreation resource? *

I believe that the LFGA Shooting Sports Facility represents one of many important community sport and recreational resources, in our City. The Facility is unique and, compared to others across Canada, is definitely ‘second to none.’ For me, it is worth investing in this Facility, given its social and economic impact to our City.

*Do you believe that the LFGA Shooting Sports Facility should be treated
differently than other sporting venues by the City of Lethbridge? If so,
how?*

No. The Facility offers sport and recreational opportunities to residents just like our rinks, pools, parks, ball diamonds, et cetera. While there may be public perceptions of the activity involved at the Facility, I am confident in the safety of the facility, and the ongoing efforts of the LFGA to improve the quality of experience for the users. In my opinion, the Facility is simply another offering of quality sport and recreation opportunities in Lethbridge.

*What is your position on ethical hunting and our need to support modern
methods of wildlife management.*

While I am not a hunter, I support ethical hunting and sustainable wildlife and wilderness management. Part of my support for the LFGA stems from our shared values surrounding land and wildlife stewardship.

*How would you support the extensive conservation, environment protection
and revitalization, and wildlife management programs we provide?*
As a City Councillor, my role in support of these programs would be through advocacy. If the LFGA brought an opportunity or issue to my attention, then it would be my responsibility to carry that to City Council. If it was something the City could undertake, then I would support further investigation into funding support, as well as advocate to other agencies, departments, or organizations, as required.

*Have you ever worked with the LFGA in the past and what was your
experience?*

Yes. The experience was incredibly educational, tremendously enlightening and personally rewarding. The expertise of your members, such as Scott S., Allan F. and Rick B., easily gave me confidence in the operation of the Facility, and an appreciation for the sport. The fact that the LFGA is one of the most open and proactive organizations in our community demonstrates your commitment to our residents.
