Scott,

Thanks for the email, and the interest you and the LFGA members are taking in the upcoming election.  Please see my responses below.

Do you support the continued operation of the Lethbridge Fish & Game Shooting Sports Facility in its current location in Pennaquim Park?

Yes.  The upgrades to the facility and the excellent programs and practices in place have reduced or eliminated any concerns I may have had.

Do you believe the City of Lethbridge has an obligation to residents by assisting the Lethbridge Fish and Game Association provide a safe, controlled environment to use firearms?

Yes.  I believe we have been very helpful through our Capital Investments in the range.

Do you agree that the LFGA Shooting Sports Facility represents an important community sport and recreation resource?

Yes.  While not a member myself, I have many friends who are active users of the facility, and use it not only for recreation, but to perfect their skills to represent our community at Provincial, National, and even International events.

Do you believe that the LFGA Shooting Sports Facility should be treated differently than other sporting venues by the City of Lethbridge? If so, how?

Only insofar as any venue involving the use of firearms has to be held to the highest possible standards of public safety and security.

What is your position on ethical hunting and our need to support modern methods of wildlife management.

While I did some hunting in my youth, it was never a pleasurable activity for me.  I do enjoy target shooting, and would love to explore archery in the future. While I understand the need for conserving our biodiversity, I don’t feel I am qualified to answer this question.  If this question ever arose in Council, I would rely on the experts from LFGA to provide good research and advice.

How would you support the extensive conservation, environment protection and revitalization, and wildlife management programs we provide?

Similar to our support of other organizations:  Provide education opportunities, encourage community participation, provide a venue for information sharing, and encourage collaboration between community groups.

Have you ever worked with the LFGA in the past and what was your experience?

Many times.  Aside from the experiences of working with the knowledgeable members from LFGA in Council meetings, budget deliberations, and information sessions, I have formally toured the range, and visited on several occasions.  All the people I have dealt with have been reasonable, knowledgeable, and always willing to work together for the betterment of our community.  Safety and security has always been their top priority, and I appreciate their attention to ensuring a world class facility for our residents.
