U.N. Firearms Marking – It’s coming and why you should care!

According to the newly launched website  “STOP U.N. FIREARM MARKINGS

The U.N. Firearm Marking is a requirement (to begin June 1, 2017) to engrave the characters ‘CA-17’ on every firearm imported into Canada. This aimless standard has major implications!

The UN Firearm Marking:

  • Does absolutely nothing to assist in public safety (why engrave all guns with the characters ‘CA-17’ when each firearm already has a unique serial number?)
  • Would costs Canadian firearm distributors millions of dollars in new equipment thereby increasing the consumer price of nearly every firearm you buy by about $200 (according to the Canadian Shooting Sport Association).
  • Applies to all barrelled ‘firearms’ (214 FPS+). This outrageous requirement will include airsoft, paintball, BB, and pellet guns. This will destroy airsoft and paintball sports in Canada.
  • Can damage the finish on firearms with quality finishes such as chrome, Cerakote, etc.
  • Prevent certain firearm manufacturers from continuing to sell in Canada because some firearm frames are too small to accommodate the engraving (notably ‘North American Arms’ revolvers).from http://stopunmarking.ca

I too would NEVER argue against anything that would actually protect our families or others, but it is impossible for me to see how marking every single privately owned domestic firearm in Canada with ‘CA-17″ will make us safer.  I understand that the UN is trying to tackle large-scale illegal arms smuggling but this will not effect that issue in any significant way. Canada does not manufacture any significant amounts of firearms (if any really) so no firearms are originating from within Canada to be smuggled in quantity abroad.  What this will do is make many entry level firearms too expensive for many Canadians.  This is important as it is usually those cheaper firearms that allow youth and new adults to gain the hands-on experience they need to be safe firearm owners! For more information on this topic please visit the website linked above and if you feel the same way support the efforts to stop this costly no effect non-solution before it comes into effect June 1st – Scott
